If your elderly family member is already at risk of experiencing serious health issues, the coronavirus definitely isn’t helping anything. You and your elderly family member need to have a plan for handling changes to her health, even the changes that don’t involve Covid-19.

Work on Stocking up on Medications

The CDC recommends stocking up on two weeks or more of medications to be on the safe side, but that can be difficult. You’re dealing with insurance regulations, your senior’s doctor, and the pharmacy or mail-order pharmacy to try to make that happen. If it’s at all possible, though, making sure that your senior is stocked up on necessary medications can help her to feel more secure and protect her health.

Develop a “Just in Case” Plan with Her Doctor

Talk to your elderly family member’s doctor now about possible situations she might encounter during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s important to know where your elderly family member stands right now, medically speaking, and what you should watch out for in terms of her existing health issues. Once you’ve got a plan for what to do if your senior does become ill, you can move on to other issues.

Contact Her Doctor Right Away if She Does Feel Ill

Part of your plan with your senior’s doctor needs to include instructions about what your senior should do if she starts to feel ill. If she suspects that she has come into contact with someone who is positive for Covid-19, your senior should definitely contact her doctor. But she should also call her doctor if she becomes ill in ways related to her existing health issues.

Follow the Emergency Plan in an Emergency

The whole reason to have an emergency plan is in case something emergent happens, of course. Make sure that you and your senior review the plan as often as necessary and that if there is anything that changes for her, you start following the plan. It’s an important way that you can make sure your senior gets the health care that she needs during the time of a pandemic.

Having some extra help can do a lot to relieve the stress your elderly family member might be experiencing. Home care providers can watch out for health changes in your senior and also assist her with many of the daily tasks that could be getting more complicated for her as the pandemic continues.
