One of the big problems with being a primary family caregiver can be that other family members may not agree with all of the decisions that you’re making. Even if you have valid reasons for making the decisions you’ve made, that might not be enough for some family members.
Start with a Family Meeting
Often these types of disagreements and arguments crop up because the family members who disagree don’t have a full understanding of the situation. Even if you’ve tried to keep them informed and educate them, these misunderstandings still crop up. Start out with a family meeting in which you offer to talk over all of the issues that other family members are having. Do your best to keep the meeting as positive as you can.
Find Ways to Compromise
Sometimes other family members have a perspective that you don’t, even though you’re the primary caregiver. If it’s at all possible, try to find ways to strike a compromise between your point of view and theirs. Sometimes this isn’t feasible, simply because the compromise that they want is unsafe or isn’t consistent with what your aging family member wants. Give reasons when you won’t compromise so that no one thinks you’re trying to be difficult.
Family Therapy Can Help
Family dynamics are really complicated, which contributes greatly to this sort of conflict between caregivers and other family members. It might be a good idea to bring a family therapist into the mix. They can often help you all to unravel the situations that are creating this problem and come up with a solution that works for everyone involved. Not everyone will be excited about the idea of therapy, of course, but if you can convince them to give it a go they might be surprised.
Sometimes You Can’t Do Anything
Unfortunately, there are situations in which you can do everything humanly possible and you still might not get the result that you want. You may have to simply agree to disagree with your other family members, which can have difficulties as a solution. If you’ve honestly done everything that you can do, you may have to let it go.
These types of situations create a ton of stress for you as a caregiver, so remember to take care of yourself as much as possible. Take time away from caregiving and revisit your self-care plan to make sure you’re covering all your bases. If you don’t, you may find yourself backing away from caregiving permanently.
