Aging at home is usually the desired option for older adults, but it can be challenging as you age. Arthritis pain and weakening bone or muscle strength may make it harder to move around the home. Walking up and down stairs may make the hips or knees ache, which increases the risk of falls.

Your mom doesn’t have to move to somewhere new. She can age at home with a little help. Here are the four ways to make aging at home comfortable and safe.

Do a Safety Check of Her Home

Go through the bathroom and see if grab bars are installed. They can help reduce the risk of a fall in the shower/tub area and near the toilet. Look at the flooring in bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways. Non-slip vinyl plank flooring may be a better idea in areas that get wet.

On any staircases, look at the rails and make sure they’re secure. Check that they’re not splintering. Go through the whole house to make sure carpeting isn’t torn or wrinkled. Look for loose tiles and cracks in wood flooring.

Stop By As Often As You Can

Stop by as often as you can and have siblings do the same. With regular visits, your mom avoids feelings of loneliness or isolation. Plus, someone is there to get things done for her.

During your visits, you could prepare a few days of meals for her to reheat. You could do her laundry or mop floors. It might be helpful to her if you took her shopping and helped her put things away.

Get Others to Pop In From Time to Time

Social visits will help your mom avoid feeling lonely. See if family friends, siblings, and close cousins/aunts/uncles can stop by on certain days. If people are often stopping in for an hour or two, your mom is more likely to have the help she needs each week while staying social.

Schedule Senior Care Services to Help Out

Senior care aides help your mom with more challenging tasks. If she’s fine with showers, grooming, and personal care, leave her to do those tasks herself. What you do see is that driving is a problem, so hire a senior care aide to escort her to stores and medical offices.

Go through a list of services with a senior care advisor and determine which would most help her remain independent. Once you have an idea, you’ll discuss prices and arrange senior care services at home.
