A crisis can crop up seemingly out of nowhere overnight or it can brew for months, with you knowing what’s in store. Regardless, living through crisis mode is not easy to do, especially when you’re a family caregiver and trying to do the best you can for your senior and her needs.

Get Clear About What You Have Control Over and What You Don’t

During a crisis, there’s a lot that you don’t have any control over. Your senior’s health is just one of those things, and if the crisis is something to do with her health you may feel more lost than ever. What you can control is how you respond and what you do. Ultimately, that’s the only thing that you can do anything about.

Find a Way to Deal with Your Emotions

Crises are very emotionally turbulent times. You may not even be able to fully identify all of the different emotions you’re feeling. Having a way to identify what you’re feeling and to deal with those emotions appropriately is incredibly important. There are healthy ways for you to express and to vent those feelings, and you’re going to need to seek out those methods.

Reach out to People Who Can Help

Very often family caregivers end up a bit isolated because caregiving takes all of their time and energy. That can leave you feeling cut off from the people you care about when you need their support the most. Make it a point to reach out to those folks and let them know what’s going on with you and whether you need help. Sometimes just having someone listen is what you truly need.

Take Time Away When You Can

Self-care is vital and part of caring for yourself involves taking the time that you need to rest when you can. A crisis doesn’t change based on whether you take some time to recharge or not. But what does change is your ability to cope with whatever is happening. Whenever possible, hire elderly care providers for respite time so that you can take the time that you need.

When you’re able to approach a crisis situation from a position of calm, that’s going to take you a lot farther. Meeting chaos with chaos rarely works out well, and it often makes everything worse. Take the time to assess what you truly need and put plans in place to meet those needs.
