Superfoods: One of the easiest ways to bolster your parent’s health is by providing her the foods she needs that will give her body some of its needed nutrients in order to thrive and live well.
The talk among superfoods had been around for some time, but have you checked the list lately? You might be surprised by some of these lesser-known superfoods that you could incorporate into your parent’s diet. Most of these are common items that can be found at any grocery store so the next time your parent and/or her elderly care provider heads to the store (or orders online), add some of these items to the shopping list.
1. Green Tea
Sipping on green tea helps your parent’s digestion as well as boosts her metabolism. If your parent struggles with constipation occasionally, having her drink a couple of glasses (or cups if she likes it hot) a day might bring some much-needed relief. It can also act as an appetite suppressant if your parent needs something to prevent her from snacking too much or overeating.
2. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. Whether your parent likes her tomatoes fresh or cooked, they can help reduce the risk of some cancers.
3. Pomegranates
Another food high in antioxidants is the pomegranate. It is also great at reducing bad cholesterol and plaque buildup, thus reducing the risk of heart disease or strokes. Purchase a quart of juice to keep in the fridge for your parent to drink with her breakfast each day. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, purchase some fresh pomegranates and have fun popping out the edible seeds.
4. Cinnamon
While it’s nearly impossible to eat enough cinnamon to reap the benefits of its super-food power, taking it as a daily supplement can help your parent to reduce her cholesterol and manage her blood sugars. Have your elderly care provider help your parent find it in your store’s supplement aisle.
5. Salmon
Fatty fish like salmon contain Omega-3 fatty acids which help lower heart disease. Your parent can eat it fresh, frozen, or even canned to get the benefits of those Omega-3 fatty acids. Just make sure if she’s not eating fresh, she doesn’t choose an option that is overloaded in salt and fat for flavoring.
6. Beans
These little legumes are packed with tons of nutrients and antioxidants that will aid in keeping your parent healthy. One serving is full of protein, calcium, fiber, and iron, all of which can be hard to add to a diet regularly.
7. Blueberries
One of the most commonly known superfoods, we had to add it in here as well because they’re just that good. Besides being delicious, blueberries are rich in antioxidants and help reduce the risk of heart disease.
8. Dark Chocolate
Finally, it’s wonderful to have a little sweet snack that’s actually good for your parent as well. Dark chocolate is great for the immune system and has been known to lower blood pressure. Find single-serving packages that your parent can keep in a bowl on the counter to enjoy a little piece at the end of her day. It might even help her sleep better!
