Traveling with seniors can be fun. They may be retired or just trying to enjoy their golden years. Either way, exploring the world or even more of their home state can make them very happy. However, with that being said, it is important to make sure they are safe when traveling. There are some very important things to address when it comes to caregivers, seniors, and traveling.

-Talk to the Doctor
If you are going on a long trip with a senior citizen, it is important to talk to their doctor before doing so. Sometimes long trips can be emotionally and physically stressful for the elderly. You will also want to make sure you pack all the OTC and prescription medications they will be needing.

-Check Their Clothing
To keep senior citizens safe during travel, you will want to check the clothing they have packed. Make sure it is loose-fitting, so it doesn’t affect their circulation. This is even more important if you are going on a long trip or a trip farther away from home. The senior citizen should also wear compression stockings if their doctor recommends it. These will also help with circulation.

-Keep an Eye on Their Hydration
Traveling with a senior can be fun, as mentioned above. However, you want to keep them safe in every way possible. You can do this by making sure they stay hydrated. It can be helpful to have them keep a bottle of water with them at all times, especially if they are on a plane. Keeping hydrated will protect their immune system and help fight jet lag, as well.

-Keep Food On Hand
Many senior citizens are diabetic or hypoglycemic. Going a long time without eating can cause health issues for these seniors. Make sure you keep food on hand at all times, so there are no such issues.

-Moving Around
You will also want to make sure the senior citizen is able to move around often. It is recommended that they move around at least once per hour. This will keep their blood circulation going, prevent blood clots, reduce the chances of stiff joints, and improve their overall health, too.

-Be Organized
Stress can really put a toll on a senior citizen’s body. It is important to keep any trip they are going on as stress-free as you can. This can be accomplished by being organized. Plan out the trip and what is going to be done each day. Make the days lighter and don’t plan things to fill up the entire day. Senior citizens need downtime.

-Bring a Walker or Cane
In some instances, you and the senior citizen may have to walk long distances. It can be helpful to bring along a walker or a cane. This can help them from getting as sore during these walks.

It can be a great time taking a trip with a senior. They may enjoy it more than you realize. However, you want to take the necessary precautions to make sure they are safe. Follow the tips above to do just that.
