Per Pew Research, almost 5 out of 10 adults are providing support to a child and parent at the same time. For those in this position, 31 percent report feeling the strain. They feel rushed and pulled in different directions. That’s stressful. Left unmanaged, the stress can build up and affect mental and physical health.
If you’re in the position where you still have a child at home while you also care for a parent, you need to learn how to manage the stress. You’re handling two households, but there are ways to de-stress and be happier with your daily routine.
Make Healthy Food Choices
It’s tempting to grab takeout when you’re rushed. Pizza, fast food, Chinese, etc. are all food options that tend to be high-fat and high-sodium choices. Poor nutritional choices increase the risk of obesity, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. All of which can make you feel worse.
Focus on healthy options. Whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh produce are important. If you can’t take the time to cook meals for yourself, look for restaurants that focus on seafood, grains, and vegetables. Mediterranean restaurants are a good place to start.
Don’t Skip Daily Exercise Routines
Exercise is a good way to de-stress. Go for a walk. Ride your bike. Join a Zumba or Yoga class. Put on a video and work out in the comfort of your home. Make sure you’re burning off some of your angst with at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.
Find a Hobby
Take time every day to do something you love. Find a hobby that helps you relax and focus on your passion. If knitting helps you unwind, take up knitting. You might like to read, draw, paint, or play computer games. Whatever makes you feel relaxed and happy is the thing to focus on each day.
Let Someone Else Take Over From Time to Time
When you’re caring for two generations at the same time, it can be overwhelming. Don’t let it negatively impact your health. Make sure you take breaks regularly. Even if you feel it’s unnecessary, hire a caregiver to step in while you go for a walk, go on vacation, or take a break in a quiet room for an hour or two.
Home care services can help your parents age at home without having to rely on you for everything. With caregivers giving you the break you need, you’re able to de-stress. Call a home care agency now.
