To age at home, there may come a time when your dad needs some elderly care services. He may be at that point already. When he can’t cook his meals, clean his house, or make and keep appointments, he needs help.
Elderly care professionals can help you out, but how can you help him choose the best form of care?
You Have Three Options
In this situation, there are really just three options. Two involve home care services. Caregivers help your dad complete daily activities in his home. It could be a professional caregiver sent by an agency each day, every few days, or once a week. The other is a family caregiver.
Family members are familiar faces, so they can be a good choice for elderly care. It’s hard on the caregiver, however. Family caregivers have to take time out of work or personal time to go to an elderly parent’s house to help out.
Family caregiving is often unpaid.
While it’s easiest on the wallet, it can be incredibly stressful for the caregiver. Plus, it can deeply impact relationships as resentment builds up between the caregiver and siblings or other family members who don’t help out or make comments about the quality of care.
The final option is assisted living.
Assisted living requires a few things from your dad. He has to move out of his home. He may have to sell his house, which means deciding what goes and what stays. If he decides to rent it out, someone has to take over the role of landlord. Either way, he has to downsize, move furniture from one location to another, and start over in an unfamiliar location.
Assisted living also requires a hefty rent payment right from the start.
Each experience is unique. One family found that the assisted living community they chose required the first month’s rent to go on a waiting list. After paying that month’s rent, they waited months for an apartment to open up. When it finally did, they had a week’s notice to sign the lease, start moving their mom in, and get her house up for sale.
Ask Him What He Wants
For some seniors, moving into a community sounds better. They like the idea of having new friends, activities, and amenities like a restaurant, salon, library, fitness center, and theater in one building. Others dread leaving home and moving to an unfamiliar setting. What does your dad want?
Most seniors want to age at home. It’s likely that this will be your dad’s answer. Make sure he’s involved when hiring caregivers from an elderly care agency. After all, he’s the one getting the care, so consider his opinion.
