Fall is coming. Kids are back in school. In some areas, nights are starting to get cool. For some, the rainy season kicks into high gear. Don’t let your parent get bored on a rainy day. Here are some old card games your parents likely grew up with and would love to play with friends and family.
Cribbage
In cribbage, you aim for card counts of 15 and a round total of 31. Players lay cards trying to get to 15 without letting their opponent get 15. For example, if you play a 10 and your opponent plays a 5, your opponent has 15 and advances two spaces on a cribbage board. Keep playing until you reach 31 or as close to it as possible.
After cards are played, scores are totaled to move pieces on the board. You get 2 points for cards totaling 15. You get points for sequential runs and pairs.
Gin Rummy
Two players are needed in Gin Rummy. You can play with more if desired. Every player gets 10 cards. They try to form sets of cards. Sets can be three or more matching numbers or a sequential run of three or more numbers. You start off by going through your cards and seeing if the original deal gave you any sets.
On your turn, you can draw the next card in the pile or take the last discarded card. You use these cards to form sets with your cards. You can add more cards to sets you’ve already formed.
The goal in Gin Rummy is to get the cards in your hand down to zero or to a low point total that you’re certain can beat your opponent’s hand. If you do form sets with all of your cards, you have a Gin and get additional points.
Whist
You need two decks of cards and four players to play whist. Each player is dealt 13 cards. The dealer turns one card over to determine the suit (trump) for the round. Players must play a card that is worth more than the trump card and the cards played by the other three players. The suit should match.
If a player doesn’t have the matching suit, they can play any card. The winner of the round starts the next round. The person to win the most rounds is the game’s winner.
Games are one of the best ways to get grandkids and grandparents spending time together. This ensures your parent is getting some socialization. Once a week or month may not be enough. If your parents are isolated, consider bringing in companionship while you’re at work or if you live far away.
Caregivers are great companions to seniors who are aging at home and need home care services. In addition, to help with housework and cooking, caregivers can play games, join for a tea time conversation, or take your parents to the store. Call a home care agency to get started.
