Social Seniors: April 3 is National Handmade Day. What a great way to spend some time with your aging parent, making handmade gifts for those you both care about! With this holiday positioned right during the Easter weekend, you may choose to work on your handmade projects before the holiday to hand out on April 3, or you might like working on some handmade projects that directly relate to the Easter holiday. Whichever you choose, you and your parent are sure to have fun creating special, handmade gifts for those you love.
Baking and Cooking
Anything your parent makes with her hands can be considered handmade so if she likes to bake cookies, pies, or other sweets, why not help her bake up a bunch of sweets to share during the April 3 weekend? They can be spring-themed, Easter-themed, or just because she cares. Your parent may appreciate a helper for this task as sometimes even following written down recipes can be difficult. If you are unable to join her, ask another family member or her home care provider to “supervise” her baking endeavors to celebrate national handmade day.
Writing
It can be as simple as a handwritten card or as thorough as a complete story written specifically for someone. Even if your parent’s handwriting is a bit on the messy side, family members especially love getting gifts with a grandparent’s writing on it. Another great idea for a handwritten handmade gift is having your parent write down family recipes on actual recipe cards to give out. If she’s feeling especially generous, she could bake up a treat and then attach the recipe to the gift basket to create a one-of-a-kind handmade gift to celebrate the day.
Crafting
Handmade gifts can be gifts that have been sewn, carved, painted, or knit just to name a few of the possible ways a person can create a handmade gift. If your parent is already artistic and has been creating handmade gifts for years, she can use April 2 as a date to show to her appreciation to those around her with the items she creates. Her gifts can be used as thank you gifts (such as to her postal carrier or home care providers) or as I love you gifts (such as to family and dear friends).
If your parent isn’t naturally crafty or a social senior, there are plenty of craft kits out there that supply every item needed to create whatever the end product will be. Use April 2 as a day to get a couple craft kits and have fun sitting with your parent creating unique (and perhaps funny) gifts through the craft kits. The final product doesn’t really matter, in this case, it’s all about spending the time together.
Gardening
With spring right around the corner (or already here in parts of the country), a handmade gift from your parent’s garden can be a bright and cheerful gift for her to share. Maybe she has some tulips blooming that she can cut and place in a vase for a friend that is not feeling well, or maybe it’s finally time for her to split some of her larger plants and create seedlings for her family member to plant at their own homes.
A handmade gift shows care and love no matter what it is. Spread a little love on April 3 with a handmade gift.
