It’s that time of year when families start planning their large family gatherings for some of their favorite holidays. For many, this time of year unites some more distant family members for the first time of the year. It offers up great reasons for everyone to gather in one place, enjoy a meal, reflect upon some memories, and create new ones to last until the next family get-together. For seniors receiving home care services, these events are also a chance to stay connected and engaged with loved ones in a familiar, supportive way.

If you are caring for an elderly family member who may not be able to fully enjoy this type of large gathering (especially if it is many hours or days long), don’t worry about having to miss out on the entire thing. You may still be able to bring your loved one to enjoy some or all of the fun with the proper preparation and guidance from their home care provider.

Before You Go: Partner with Home Care Support

If this family gathering is not at your home, find out from the host how long it’ll be and what will happen at what time. If your loved one gets extremely tired after several hours, you might want to plan your stay during the time he’d most enjoy, whether that’s joining in on the meal or playing family games at night.

If you live in an area where the gathering may be outside, make sure to check the weather forecast that morning to see if you need to prepare for any possible inclement weather or large temperature changes. It can help to bring a sweater or jacket for when the sun goes down.

Pack up essentials. Don’t expect the hostess to have everything your loved one needs to enjoy his visit. You can talk to his home care provider about making sure he has a bag packed of all the things he needs to have a good time with family.

If you’re running tight on time, the home care provider can also help him get ready for the outing by helping him get dressed, shaving, and combing out his hair.

Keeping Comfort in Mind

Once you arrive at the family gathering, talk to your loved one about where he wants to sit and enjoy the night. Does he want to be in the middle of all of the activity so he can hear what’s going on better and be a big part of it? Or does he prefer to sit more off to the side so he can observe and enjoy the night that way? Each person is wired differently when it comes to socializing, so don’t assume that what would make you happy will also make your loved one happy.

If your loved one needs assistance with things such as getting food, using the bathroom, or getting around, make sure someone is assigned to him at all times. You shouldn’t have to do it all yourself. Ask family members to take 30 or 60-minute rotations in being by his side so he doesn’t get forgotten about, but you still have a bit of time to enjoy yourself as well.

Returning Home with Care and Ease

Finally, be flexible. Your loved one may have thought he’d easily enjoy the whole night, but then might find out he’s overly tired or isn’t feeling well. You may need to leave early to get him back home so that he doesn’t get too worn out or become ill.

With continued home care support, your loved one can rest, recover, and stay comfortable after the festivities, ensuring that every family gathering ends with peace, safety, and cherished memories.
